ENG 104 Comp II Online

Eng 104 Composition II

Research Prospectus

Overview
The major Research Project is the centerpiece of Composition II . It is a lengthy and detailed assignment which requires thorough research, convincing arguments, and effective writing. Such tasks require foresight and planning. The Research Prospectus is a way of "looking ahead" (which is what prospectus means) at the major features of your research paper's content in order to help you to refine what you will be presenting. You will also be reviewing the Prospectuses of the members of your Peer Review Group.

Note: Before you can write your Prospectus, you will have to have done enough preliminary research on your issue to have identified some of the major arguments--for and against--being used in source materials.

The Assignment
Your Prospectus will be a posting to your online Discussion Group which provides the responses to the following seven questions. Present and number your responses in the order indicated.

    1. Proposed working title for your research project?

    2. What is the issue which will be the focus of your research project?

    3. What is your Research Question about the issue?

    4. What is your Research Hypothesis --that is, what is the answer to your Research Question?

    5. Briefly present the three (3) strongest arguments for your hypothesis, the arguments you will use to support your claims. Label these A, B, & C. Try to limit yourself to three or four sentences for each.

    6. Briefly present the three (3) strongest arguments against your hypothesis, the arguments you will either be conceding or refuting in your essay. Label these A, B, & C. Try to limit yourself to three or four sentences for each.

    7. Make any other comments or ask any questions you think are relevant to your project.

Your Grade
This assignment will be graded with one of the three exercise grades:

( +), ( ), or ( -)

This grade will also be taken into account when your Research Unit Grade is being determined at the end of the course.
